The BrownDog™ 170702 is an SO16 (SOIC-16) to 16 pin DIP adapter, suitable for both narrow and wide-body SO16 devices. With the electronics industry’s move to surface-mount technology, many integrated circuits are now only available in SMT packages. While SMT is preferable for high-volume, automated manufacturing, prototyping and evaluation with this type of IC is difficult without a way to easily connect test probes to their contact pins. And compared to its through-hole siblings, it is difficult to remove an SMD from its circuit board without expensive hot-air rework equipment, and without damaging the component itself or the PCB. The 170702 adapter provides a convenient solution when working with SO16-package devices in these situations. As a pin-to-pin adapter, an SO16 component installed on the 170702 will be functionally equivalent to a 16 pin DIP device. Whether you’re replacing an existing DIP device, designing for interchangeability, or in prototyping and evaluation, the 170702 is the perfect answer.
The 170702 is made with contemporary PCB design techniques, software, and manufacturing. With electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) surface finish for conductivity and flat surface planarity, and 0.020 in. minimum trace widths, there will be no detectable difference between an SO16 device (0.050 in./1.27mm pitch) mounted to the 170702 and an equivalent DIP device.
